World Toilet Day #LeavingNoOneBehind - 19/11/2019

What is World Toilet Day?

It’s not what you think. In fact, today is a day to draw attention to those who do not have the privilege of safe sanitation. Established in 2001 to help make a lifechanging difference to people’s lives. World Toilet Day is about tackling the global sanitation crisis with the overall goal of achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) with the hope of safe sanitation for all by 2030.

Why is it important?

What appears to be a simple privilege to us, can often be taken for granted, but a toilet is not just a toilet. Human waste can carry many diseases, with 432,000 diarrhoeal deaths caused every year due to spread of bacteria, with at least 2 billion people using a drinking water source that is contaminated with faeces.

Around 297,000 children under the age of 5 are estimated to die each year from diarrhoea as a result of unsafe drinking water, sanitation, and hand hygiene.
A toilet leaves you feeling dignified as well as providing comfort, it is a basic human right for safe sanitation. For this reason, we want to bring attention to the issues that millions of people face every day and educate on how everyone can help.
